Well, distraction wise, I don’t know how much better I’m getting. But since over the last two days, I’ve gone from feeling like I haven’t watched a movie in ages to watching 4. Firstly, Mallrats, which was for the most part, excellent (despite the little nap I took for approx. 10 minutes - it was like 3am).
Then came Blue Velvet which was total Lynch heavenly. But Dennis Hopper kinda annoyed me in it. But that may be a mood thing, and I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.
After this came Happiness at my mate Eugene’s place. Despite it’s Magnolia and Ameican Beauty vibe (which is just narrowly predated) I found it to be quite up there in the uplifting basket. It was my first Solondoz. And I found the way he dealt with the kiddie toucher guy to be non judgmental, which was a relief. Jane Adams is amazing though. Triple love her.
Then at approximately 2.30am on Thursday morning came a late night downloaded screening on my laptop of HBO’s Telemovie Grey Gardens. Originially sloted for a theatrical release, the movie adaptation of the classic 1975 documentary got downsized to TV. But it works nonetheless. Oh boy does it work. You could not ask for anything better than the godsend that is Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange as the Edies. Major tick in the satisifaction box here. Pffhew! And on a minor side note, Jeanne Tripplehorn is as ever fantastic, however, she pulled out a bit of an Ellen Burstyn-Mrs. Harris Emmy nomination, where she must be on screen for a maximum of 5 minutes. Beware other Emmy nominees. Don’t forget Judi Dench’s 8 minute Oscar winning performance in Shakespeare in Love. If they love Tripplehorn, you’re out!
But now, what to watch today?!? There are so many choices. Right now I’m letting the Sufjan Stevens Christmas Records infect my soul with a wavering feeling towards joyous sharing and family yearning time.
